Needs vs Wants for Kids

Help children understand the difference between essentials, nice-to-have purchases, and impulse spending.

Keep the definition simple

A need is something important for health, safety, or everyday life. A want is something enjoyable but not essential right now.

Practice during requests

Before a withdrawal or spending request, ask the child to choose whether the item is a need, a want, or a future goal.

Common parent questions

Can a want still be good?

Yes. Wants are not bad. The lesson is to plan for them rather than spend without thinking.
